Do You Need a VPS for Forex EA Trading? Complete Guide

Do You Need a VPS for Forex EA Trading?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) keeps your MetaTrader 4 running 24/7 without needing your personal computer on at all times. Here’s why it matters for EA trading.

Why Use a VPS?

Without VPS:

  • EA only runs when your PC is on
  • Internet disconnections stop trading
  • PC restarts/updates interrupt the EA
  • Power outages = missed trades

With VPS:

  • EA runs 24/5 without interruption
  • Low-latency connection to broker servers
  • Professional-grade uptime (99.9%+)
  • Access from any device

When a VPS is Essential

  • Running grid trading EAs (like GridMaster) that need to manage open positions continuously
  • Trading during all market sessions (not just when you’re awake)
  • When your internet connection is unreliable
  • When you want truly hands-off automated trading

Free VPS Options

XM Free VPS: XM offers a free VPS to clients who maintain a minimum balance of $5,000 OR trade at least 5 standard lots per month. If you’re actively running EAs, you may qualify.

Oracle Cloud Free Tier: Oracle offers always-free ARM-based instances that can run MT4 via Wine/Docker. Technical setup required but completely free.

Important: MT4 continues running even when you disconnect from the VPS.
